Country duo Maddie & Tae have unveiled their latest EP, “What A Woman Can Do,” on September 13, just days before their much-anticipated performance at the Grove Stage during the Student Activities Association’s Fall Concert on September 22.
The release of this EP comes as Maddie & Tae continue to build on their career, which began with the chart-topping hit “Girl In A Country Song” in 2014. Since then, the duo has released seven singles, seven EPs, and two studio albums. Their new EP aims to capture the success of their 3x-Platinum single “Die From A Broken Heart,” and early signs suggest it could achieve that goal.
The lead single, “Heart They Didn’t Break,” offers a poignant tribute to the supportive friendships that help mend the emotional wounds left by failed relationships. The song’s opening line—“It’s 200 miles from Ole Miss”—adds a personal touch, though the connection to the University of Mississippi remains unclear. This attention to detail underscores the EP’s commitment to the authenticity and specificity central to country music.
The EP features a mix of rock-infused country tunes, with a strong focus on female empowerment. “Heart They Didn’t Break” and other tracks highlight the duo’s signature sound while advancing the theme of women supporting one another. The title track includes evocative lyrics such as:
“Give her a house, she’ll make it a home // That you’ll miss her like hell when you’re gone too long // She’ll build your whole world in a living room // Man, what a woman can do.”
Additionally, “Sad Girl Summer” serves as a breakup anthem with a rock edge, showcasing Maddie & Tae’s affinity for electric guitar and their ongoing commitment to uplifting women.
In an era where country music often spotlights a single female artist at a time, Maddie & Tae’s new EP represents a refreshing shift, promoting solidarity among women in the genre. The duo’s performance at the Grove Stage will bring this message to Ole Miss students, further reinforcing the camaraderie and support embodied in their music.
Maddie & Tae will take the stage at 5 p.m. on September 22, joined by fellow country artists Annie Bosko and Just Jayne.
