Columbia University has introduced its innovative Hip Hop Public Health initiative to Indian healthcare and social work professionals in Mumbai. Following success in the United States, the program uses hip hop music to boost health literacy and inspire behavior change, especially among youth.
On Tuesday, the Columbia Global Center Mumbai hosted a panel showcasing this approach to empower underserved communities. As one of 11 global centers, it engages faculty, students, and local partners on pressing issues, including health and education. Dr. Olajide Williams, chief of staff and professor of Neurology at Columbia University, presented the initiative, which was established in 2011. The program leverages music and culture to address health disparities and educate marginalized groups on issues like brain stroke prevention.
