South Star Music Festival Kicks Off with Mud, Rain, and Nostalgia

by Barbara

The inaugural South Star Music Festival delivered a memorable weekend, despite facing several last-minute hurdles. Mud and rain from the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, a viral incident that led to Jane’s Addiction dropping out, and adjusted start times challenged organizers in the days leading up to the event. Additionally, Winona Fighter, a Nashville punk band, and Texas rock group Dexter and the Moonrocks were removed from the lineup.

Still, thousands of music fans gathered to celebrate the festival, which featured a nostalgic blend of ’90s and early 2000s acts. Attendees were treated to an array of genres, bringing them back to the era of grunge, hip-hop, and pop bands—long before the digital age transformed music.

The gates opened at 2:30 p.m., with Seattle rockers Candlebox kicking things off at 3 p.m. The ’90s band, known for its mix of alternative rock and grunge, performed hits from their 1993 debut album, including fan favorites “Far Behind” and “You.” Following them were the Gin Blossoms, whose album New Miserable Experience became a staple of the ’90s alternative rock scene with singles like “Hey Jealousy” and “Found Out About You.”

Despite fewer acts and some unexpected twists, the South Star Music Festival’s debut proved a success. The event brought together a diverse crowd to enjoy music, art, and community, creating lasting memories for all who attended.
