Kaseem Ryan, known professionally as Ka, a prominent Brooklyn rapper, producer, and firefighter, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday at the age of 52. His death was announced through a post on his Instagram account.
Ryan was a valued member of the hip-hop collective Natural Elements and served as a captain in the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). He collaborated with notable artists including Roc Marciano and GZA, receiving accolades from musicians such as Erykah Badu and Yasiin Bey, formerly known as Mos Def.
The Instagram post requested privacy for Ka’s family during their time of grief, stating, “Born and raised in Brownsville, Brooklyn, Ka lived a life of service—to his city, his community, and his music.” It highlighted his 20-year tenure with the FDNY, where he bravely served as a first responder during the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center. The post also noted his remarkable legacy as a recording artist, which includes eleven self-released solo albums.
Ka was known for hosting DIY events for his album launches, where he connected personally with fans and celebrated community. He took pride in his independence, often self-producing his music and managing his own orders.
Jeff Weiss, writer and founder of POW Recordings, paid tribute to Ka on Twitter/X, calling him “rap’s greatest minimalist” and praising his dedication to both his city and craft. Weiss described him as “the master of quiet rage, writing zen koans with unremitting soul & passion,” emphasizing the depth and wisdom in his lyrics.
In August, Ka released his latest album, The Thief Next to Jesus. He is survived by his wife, mother, and sister, as noted in the Instagram announcement.
