In a surprising turn of events, rock legends Queen have hinted at the possibility of releasing new music, marking a potential return to the studio after a 30-year hiatus. The band’s last album, Made In Heaven, was released in 1995, four years after the passing of their iconic frontman, Freddie Mercury.
Drummer Roger Taylor, 75, expressed optimism about creating new material in an interview. “I think we might,” he said, adding that he and guitarist Brian May, 77, had recently discussed their songwriting prospects. “If we feel we have some good material, why not? We can still play. We can still sing. So I don’t see why not.”
While Queen has been actively touring with Adam Lambert since 2012, May remains skeptical about producing a new album that features the American Idol runner-up. Despite having explored potential songs in the studio, he acknowledged resistance from some Queen fans who are not in favor of new material, though he respects their loyalty to Mercury.
“We have been in the studio. We did knock a few ideas around in the middle of one of those tours, but it just never quite reached the place where we felt it was going to be right,” May explained in a 2023 interview with Total Guitar magazine. “So we haven’t pursued it that far.” As the band navigates the delicate balance between honoring their past and exploring new creative avenues, fans remain hopeful for a musical revival from this iconic group.
