Next spring, the Virginia Arts Festival will host the U.S. premiere of the Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Black Sabbath – The Ballet, a groundbreaking fusion of classical ballet and heavy metal music. The production will bring together the energetic choreography of traditional ballet with the powerful sounds of Black Sabbath, one of the pioneers of heavy metal.
Known for its orchestra and dance performances, the Virginia Arts Festival is taking an innovative leap by combining the grace of ballet with the raw energy of rock music—a first for the festival. Executive Director Rob Cross expressed his excitement about expanding the festival’s offerings. “If you have any interest in live performing arts, there’s something here for you,” he said, emphasizing the festival’s mission to cater to diverse audiences.
The Birmingham Royal Ballet previously performed at the Virginia Arts Festival in 2007, earning rave reviews. “It’s a young, energetic company, and you have to be an incredible athlete to do what they do,” Cross remarked, noting the company’s unique dynamism.
The ballet company, based in Birmingham, England, shares its hometown with Black Sabbath and sought to broaden its audience by combining ballet with the music of these heavy metal legends. After its debut in Birmingham in September 2023, Black Sabbath – The Ballet featured classic tracks like “Paranoid” and “Iron Man,” along with new compositions inspired by the band’s music.
This innovative performance promises to unite fans of both rock and classical dance in a way never seen before.
