by Barbara

Saskatchewan native Adam Johnson is swiftly establishing himself in the country music landscape with his innovative, genre-blending sound. Recently, we had the opportunity to delve deeper into his debut album, “For The Record,” and learn more about his journey in music.

In a candid conversation with the 2023 SCMA Emerging Artist of the Year, Johnson shared insights about his path to country music. His journey wasn’t straightforward; he recalls, “When I was younger, I was like, ‘country music sucks. You’ll never catch me listening to country music.’” However, growing up in Saskatchewan made it difficult to escape the genre’s influence.

It was during the pandemic that Johnson fully embraced his country roots. He recalled writing his first country song, “Come On, Let’s Go.” “I happened to have a country song written,” he said. “So I was like, you know what? I have a lot of belief in this song. I’m trapped in this pandemic world. I’m going to record it myself!” That track became his first radio single, paving the way for a successful career in country music. “At that point, I’d become a country fan. So I really enjoyed diving into the genre,” he added.

Johnson’s rock background is evident in his debut album, “For The Record,” which skillfully blends elements of country, rock, and pop. “I feel like I wrote a really fun album that you can party to and has an amazing rock energy,” he expressed. Songs like “Blame It On Me” highlight this genre-defying style, while emotional ballads like “Three Minutes” showcase his talent as a songwriter.

The title track, “For The Record,” was inspired by his father’s extensive record collection. “I wanted to write a song about how music can become attached to a moment and become so meaningful,” he explained. Johnson’s unique sound and heartfelt storytelling are set to make a significant impact on the country music scene.
