André 3000’s recent performance at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York City transcended traditional musical boundaries, offering audiences a cosmic and psychedelic experience rather than a conventional concert. Known for his work as one-half of OutKast, André’s solo music has recently ventured into the realms of progressive and spiritual jazz, showcasing his flute playing—a surprising turn for many fans.
This exploration was highlighted in his 2023 avant-garde instrumental album, New Blue Sun, which marks his first solo release. André openly acknowledged the unconventional nature of this project, even titling one track, “I Swear, I Really Wanted to Make a ‘Rap’ Album but This Is Literally the Way the Wind Blew Me This Time.” The album features dreamy, subdued melodies dominated by woodwinds, presenting a New Age vibe that contrasts sharply with the beloved hip-hop hits like “Hey Ya!”, “Ms. Jackson,” and “The Way You Move” that he created with Big Boi as part of OutKast.
