Dr. A.D. Carson, a professor of hip-hop at the University of Virginia, is making waves with his latest album, “Owning My Masters (Mastered): The Rhetorics of Rhymes & Revolutions.” Unlike typical releases in the music industry, this album serves as a culmination of Carson’s academic journey, blending scholarship with artistry.
Released in October 2024 by University of Michigan Press, the project includes two volumes of hip-hop music, an annotated timeline, several videos, and a digital book. Originally submitted as Carson’s doctoral dissertation at Clemson University in South Carolina, the album has now been fully mastered.
Carson discusses the significance of this work and its impact on the intersection of hip-hop and academia, highlighting its role in challenging historical narratives associated with the Old South. This innovative project not only showcases Carson’s artistic talents but also aims to redefine the discourse around hip-hop in scholarly contexts.
