Tennessee Jet Crafts His Raw, Unmistakable Sound

by Barbara

Tennessee Jet, the alt-country renegade known for his bold blend of outlaw-country influences and modern rock elements, has long been a standout in today’s pop-friendly country scene. His sound is a paradox—melding the spirit of Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, and Hank Williams Sr., with the raw energy of rock and grunge, all while avoiding the clichés of mainstream country.

A key element in achieving his distinctive sound is his choice of equipment, particularly his longtime partnership with AUDIX microphones. For full-band performances, Jet relies on the OM5 dynamic microphone, while he switches to the VX5 handheld condenser for more intimate shows. In the studio, Jet prefers the A231 large-diaphragm condenser for vocals, alongside the versatile PDX720 for both vocal and instrumental applications, and the i5 and D6 mics for support.

Jet has high praise for AUDIX, particularly for the OM5’s performance. “The build quality is excellent, and most importantly, they sound amazing,” he says. “With the OM5, I can turn my monitors up on stage and worry less about feedback. It also brings my vocals forward in a loud band mix better than a typical dynamic mic.”

For his upcoming releases, Jet has recently embraced the A231, noting its well-balanced, natural sound. “The A231 has a very flat frequency response without sounding dull, and it’s not overly bright either,” he explains. “I’ve used it on vocals, acoustic guitars, and even overheads in a Glyn Johns drum miking approach. The cymbals come through with presence and warmth, and it handles loud snare hits and rock vocals with ease, keeping everything tight.”

For Tennessee Jet, finding the right sound is as important as the music itself. With AUDIX microphones, he’s able to capture the raw authenticity that has made his music stand out in an ever-evolving country landscape.
