A federal judge indicated Thursday that she is likely to dismiss a copyright lawsuit filed by Vince Vance of Vince Vance & the Valiants against Mariah Carey over her hit song “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”
U.S. District Judge Mónica Ramírez Almadani expressed doubt that Vance had demonstrated sufficient similarities between his 1989 country song and Carey’s 1994 holiday classic to warrant a copyright infringement case.
Vance’s version of “All I Want For Christmas Is You” achieved modest success, peaking at #31 on the Billboard Country chart. In contrast, Carey’s rendition became a global phenomenon, selling over 16 million copies worldwide and earning more than $100 million in royalties. Despite sharing a title, the two songs differ significantly in melody, with both tracks focusing on the theme of longing for love rather than material gifts during the Christmas season.
