Rapper Plies has filed a lawsuit for copyright infringement against GloRilla, Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi B, and Soulja Boy, accusing them of using an unauthorized sample in their track “Wanna Be.” The lawsuit, filed on November 6 in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, claims that GloRilla’s song and its remix featuring Cardi B borrowed from Soulja Boy’s 2010 hit “Pretty Boy Swag,” which itself sampled Plies’ 2008 song “Me & My Goons.”

The complaint argues that the sample of “Me & My Goons” in “Pretty Boy Swag” was never authorized by Plies. It further asserts that both “Pretty Boy Swag” and the songs it inspired—GloRilla’s “Wanna Be” and the remix—violated Plies’ copyright. The lawsuit emphasizes that the similarities between the tracks are too significant to be mere coincidence.

Plies, whose real name is Algernod Lanier Washington, is joined in the suit by his stepbrother, Ronnell Levate, and several entities including Big Gates Records, World Music Group International, and composer Alexander Martin. They are seeking legal action against the artists involved, as well as Universal Music Group and its affiliated labels, Interscope and Collective, and other distribution companies tied to the songs.
