Gruene Hall, the historic dance hall in the heart of Gruene, Texas, has been named the best live music venue in the state by the Country Music Association of Texas (CMAT). The award further cements the venue’s status as a beloved institution in the Texas music scene.
Nestled by the Guadalupe River and surrounded by towering bald cypress trees, Gruene Hall has become a central landmark in the small town of Gruene, just northeast of New Braunfels. While the town may be known for its charming, rustic appeal, Gruene Hall is where the music truly comes alive.
For those new to the area, the venue’s name is pronounced “green”—a detail that locals are always happy to clarify.
Anna Towzin, the venue’s director of marketing, reflects on the Hall’s deep roots in the community. “Gruene Hall was built in 1878 and is the oldest continuously operating dance hall in Texas,” she explained. “When Pat Molak took over, almost to our 50th anniversary now, it was still being used as a dance hall. He restored it, and since then, it’s been open every day except for certain holidays.”
With its rich history and commitment to preserving live music, Gruene Hall has long been a favorite among country music fans and artists alike. The recent recognition from CMAT adds to the venue’s legacy, leaving many Texas dance halls green with envy over the coveted title.
