Cody Johnson’s producer, Trent Willmon, has addressed the controversy surrounding his remarks about artist Shaboozey during the 2024 CMA Awards. The incident occurred during Johnson’s acceptance speech for Leather, which won Album of the Year.

Willmon faced backlash after seemingly making a dismissive comment about Shaboozey, the artist behind the hit single “A Bar Song (Tipsy).” Taking to Instagram on Saturday, the producer sought to clear the air.

“Ok… what I meant to express in my overly-shocked and excited state was that I am very proud of @codyjohnson,” Willmon wrote. “He has worked his BOOTY off the last 15 years putting out and performing great music, and it’s not an overnight success. I was so proud he’s finally getting recognized!”

Willmon also extended an olive branch to Shaboozey, commending him for handling the situation with humor. “And shout out to Shaboozey for your response to my fumble and having a great sense of humor. Congrats on that 17-week #1 song!”

Shaboozey has not publicly addressed the controversy but has been lauded for his measured reaction. Both artists continue to shine in their respective genres, with Shaboozey riding high on his record-breaking chart success and Cody Johnson celebrating a career-defining win.
