Kendrick Lamar’s latest music video for “Squabble Up” has ignited excitement among fans and inspired The Roots to refocus on their long-awaited album. Released on November 25, the Calmatic-directed video pays homage to the iconic Philly hip-hop group, drawing clear parallels to their 1999 video for “The Next Movement.”
The clip weaves in a tapestry of hip-hop history, featuring nods to Ice-T, Nate Dogg, and scenes from Menace II Society. The tribute didn’t go unnoticed by The Roots’ drummer and frontman Questlove, who shared his reaction on Instagram Stories, acknowledging the creative spark it provided.
Sharing a viral tweet comparing the visuals of “Squabble Up” and “The Next Movement,” Questlove wrote: “Damn now we GOTTA FINISH THIS LP huh? We back BABY!”
The Roots’ forthcoming album will be their first in over a decade, and Kendrick’s homage seems to have set the wheels in motion for its completion, much to the delight of fans eager for a new chapter from the legendary group.
