Hip-hop artist Sa-Roc will headline the first-ever Black Box Sessions event in Madison, Wis., on December 5 at 8 p.m. The performance will take place at the Play Circle Theater, marking the inaugural show of the Wisconsin Union Theater’s (WUT) new series.
Known for her lyrical depth and storytelling, Sa-Roc signed with Minneapolis-based Rhymesayers Entertainment in 2016 and quickly earned recognition as one of the most dynamic voices in modern hip-hop. As an artist, she uses music to spark conversations around social justice, education, and empowerment.
Sa-Roc’s 2018 self-empowerment anthem “Forever” has racked up over 7 million views on YouTube, and her 2020 album The Sharecropper’s Daughter earned widespread acclaim for its poignant exploration of generational trauma and triumph. The album’s title is a nod to her father’s upbringing as a sharecropper, reflecting Sa-Roc’s belief that music can both educate and inspire change.
Her latest track, “Amazing Grace,” released earlier this year, encourages self-realization and empowerment. The song is about accepting one’s worth, acknowledging past accolades, and using that self-assurance to lift others up.
Tickets for the event are available online, in person at the Memorial Union Box Office, or by phone. WUT is offering a 15% discount for Black Box Sessions subscriptions through December 5.
This performance kicks off a season of exciting events under the Black Box Sessions banner, with future shows scheduled for Marlowe (Jan. 30, 2025), th1rt3en (Feb. 13, 2025), and Blackway (March 6, 2025). WUT continues its 80-year tradition of fostering innovative artistic expressions in Madison.
