U2 Teases “Sci-Fi Irish Folk” Sound for Upcoming Album

by Barbara

U2 is taking their sound in an unexpected direction for their next album, with guitarist The Edge revealing that the band is exploring “crazy new music” with longtime collaborator Brian Eno. The Edge shared that U2 is experimenting with a blend of sci-fi and Irish folk music, a bold departure from their usual rock sound.

“We’re working on some crazy kind of sci-fi Irish folk music, which could end up becoming part of the new U2 album,” The Edge said. “We’re not sure yet; we’ll see.” He explained that this adventurous approach—pushing their creative boundaries—forms part of their artistic process, helping them to craft something truly unique. “Part of our process is to go so far off track, and the act of bringing things back on track is how you get unique sounding music.”

While the project is still in its early stages, The Edge revealed that several talented Irish musicians, including U2’s own drummer Larry Mullen Jr., are contributing to the work. Mullen, who returned to the studio after recovering from surgery last year, is back “in the saddle,” joining his bandmates for what could be a game-changing chapter in U2’s storied career.

Though details of the album remain under wraps, this latest venture promises to offer a fresh, genre-bending sound that could redefine U2’s musical legacy.
