Robert Smith of The Cure has hinted at a festive surprise, revealing he’s penned a “really catchy pop song” that could potentially become a Christmas single. Smith shared his excitement over the track, noting, “I always just want an emotional response from what I write… unless I think, ‘This is a catchy idea,’ but those days have kind of gone a little bit.”
However, he couldn’t resist the urge to create a feel-good holiday hit. “Although I have written a really catchy pop song! I’m struggling to figure out how I’m gonna release it,” he laughed. Reflecting on the ubiquity of holiday classics like Wham!’s “Last Christmas,” Smith joked, “I think I just need to stick some Christmas words on it and get it out there!”
This revelation comes as The Cure fans eagerly await new music from the band. Smith also teased that The Cure is working on two upcoming albums, one of which will serve as a “companion piece” to their 2022 release Songs of A Lost World. Speaking with Absolute Radio’s Danielle Perry, Smith further divulged, “There is another album which is pretty much ready to go. It’s sort of its companion piece. Then there’s a third one which is completely different. It’s really kind of random stuff, like late-night studio stuff. But some of it is really good actually, it’s just very very different.”
