Dream Heavy, a world folk metal band from Dunster, BC, has unveiled their latest single, “Survival,” featuring Haida Hip Hop artist Ms.PANIK. The song serves as a powerful commentary on climate change and the lasting impacts of colonization, with a compelling message of hope amidst a looming apocalyptic future.
Originally written in 2019 and 2020 as part of the soundtrack for the stage play The Last Good Valley, “Survival” was delayed due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The production was paused just as Dream Heavy transitioned from their duo project, Samson’s Delilah, to a full band with a heavier sound.
The band’s members, who were also involved in supporting the Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs’ fight against the Coastal GasLink pipeline, felt the urgent need to connect the song’s themes with their ongoing struggles. To further amplify the track’s message, they enlisted Ms.PANIK, whose mid-section verse adds an essential layer to the song’s commentary.
“Survival” highlights the dire consequences of unchecked climate change while addressing the enduring effects of colonialism. Yet, it carries a message of hope, offering listeners a call for change and healing in the face of destruction.
This single is a part of Dream Heavy’s forthcoming EP, set for release next year, and continues the band’s tradition of blending thought-provoking lyrics with intricate melodies.
