Stern Grove Festival has unveiled its first major act for 2025, announcing a performance by the legendary Oakland vocal group, The Pointer Sisters. Set to take the stage on Sunday, August 10, 2025, this marks the group’s return to the iconic San Francisco venue, where they will bring their chart-topping hits to life, including “Slow Hand,” “Jump (For My Love),” and “Fire.”
The Pointer Sisters, originally from West Oakland, began their musical journey singing in their parents’ church choir before skyrocketing to fame. Over the course of their storied career, the group spanned genres from pop to country to R&B, achieving widespread success. In 1974, they made history as the first Black women to win a Grammy for a country performance with their song “Fairytale.” From 1973 to 1985, they charted 13 top-20 hits on the Billboard Hot 100.
Ruth Pointer, the last surviving member of the original lineup, will be joined on stage by her daughter, Esso Pointer, and granddaughter, Sadako Pointer, carrying on the family legacy.
Stern Grove Festival, which draws thousands of music lovers to San Francisco’s Sunset neighborhood each summer, will celebrate its 88th year in 2025. The festival is known for its free performances, attracting crowds who gather on blankets in the grove’s natural amphitheater. While The Pointer Sisters have been announced, the festival has yet to reveal additional acts for the 2025 season.
