Charlotte indie-rock trio Willingdon has released their latest single, Vicious, a deeply romantic track that blends shimmering chimes, driving bass, and an evocative guitar line. The song, which dropped this morning, sets a nostalgic, intimate tone with its hook, “When I feel your hand in mine / I’m amazed at what you do to me…” delivered by band co-founder and bassist John Blake MacManamy.
The track’s title, Vicious, carries a playful irony, according to MacManamy, who penned the lyrics as a heartfelt tribute to his wife, Grace. “It refers to that ‘looks can kill’ sentiment,” he explains, capturing the intense yet tender emotion of falling in love.
Musically, Vicious draws from a diverse range of influences, incorporating the amped-up guitars of Spoon, the rhythmic drive of Jimmy Eat World, and the unpredictable song structures of Radiohead. MacManamy’s straightforward yet evocative lyrics, rich with everyday imagery, evoke the melancholic grandeur of Bruce Springsteen’s storytelling.
Vicious marks another compelling chapter in Willingdon’s journey, blending indie-rock’s emotional depth with an infectious, timeless energy.
