Even in an era dominated by streaming, Eminem continues to cement his legacy with his latest release, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce), which debuted as one of the top-selling rap albums of 2024. With 281,000 units sold in its first week, the album secured the No. 4 spot on HipHopDX’s list of the year’s biggest rap albums by first-week sales.
While hip hop remains the most popular genre in the U.S., 2024 saw more modest debut numbers compared to previous years, with no rap album surpassing the 400,000-unit mark—something that had not happened since 2014. Nonetheless, Eminem’s sales performance showcases his continued relevance in a changing music industry. His debut week’s sales place him alongside major contemporaries like Kendrick Lamar, Tyler, The Creator, and Travis Scott.
Leading the pack was Travis Scott’s reissued 2014 mixtape Days Before Rodeo, which moved 361,000 units, followed by Kendrick Lamar’s GNX and Tyler’s Chromakopia in the top three. Despite being labeled “relatively modest” by some, Eminem’s numbers highlight his staying power in the face of shifting trends. Unlike Scott’s reissue, which saw a steep decline in Billboard chart position, Eminem’s sustained success speaks to his loyal fan base and lasting impact.
With The Death of Slim Shady, Eminem proves that even after decades in the industry, he remains a dominant force in hip hop, maintaining a level of influence and artistry that keeps him relevant among today’s top rap acts.
