On Christmas Eve, rock legend Rick Wakeman brought holiday spirit to BBC Radio Suffolk’s Sarah Lilley’s Daytime Show with a special performance on the station’s airwaves. The 75-year-old keyboardist, known for his work with Yes and his collaborations with music icons like David Bowie and Elton John, treated listeners to a selection of Christmas classics.
Wakeman, who spent much of 2024 touring the globe, graced the studio’s piano to perform timeless carols such as “In The Bleak Midwinter,” “Away In A Manger,” and “Welcome A Star.” His presence was a heartwarming addition to the Christmas Eve programming, as he shared his affection for the holiday and the music that accompanies it.
“I love coming in [to BBC Radio Suffolk] at Christmas. It is just lovely and it is part of my Christmas,” said Wakeman, reflecting on his annual tradition. He also expressed his fondness for classic holiday music, citing favorites from Bing Crosby and Slade, though he noted that there haven’t been many modern holiday tunes that have captured the same magic since the days of Roy Wood and Slade.
Wakeman’s festive spirit extended beyond his solo performance, as he reflected on his current Yuletide Christmas Tour, which has been a highlight of his year. “Over the years I’ve done between 30 or 40 different Christmas shows, and this has been the most enjoyable and the best one ever,” he shared. The tour has featured guest appearances from his son, Adam Wakeman, and singer Mollie Marriott, both of whom added humor and warmth to the performances.
Wakeman’s impromptu Christmas Eve radio performance was a charming end to a busy year of concerts, reminding fans of his enduring talent and love for both music and the holiday season.
