Mariah Carey, the undisputed “Queen of Christmas,” almost didn’t release a holiday album that would go on to define the season for generations. Known for her iconic hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” Carey’s Christmas music has become a holiday staple, but the decision to record an album wasn’t always a certainty.
Carey, now 55, revealed that she initially felt it was “too early in her career” to release a Christmas album. “I felt it was too soon,” Carey explained, reflecting on her early hesitations. However, despite her doubts about the timing, she eventually embraced the idea, feeling destined to create her “own little magical, merry world of Christmas.”
That world became a reality in 1994 with the release of Merry Christmas, her fourth studio album. The album, which featured the smash hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” has since become one of the best-selling holiday albums of all time.
Carey recalls her approach to the album: “I focused on all the things my mother struggled to create; all I needed was a shower of glitter and a full church choir to back me up.” With that, Carey launched her reign as the unrivaled Queen of Christmas, transforming the holiday music landscape forever.
