Portuguese modern metal band Above the Ocean returns with their latest single, “Therapy,” a raw and cathartic anthem celebrating music’s power to heal and restore. Following the success of their previous track “Love Song (For the Broken),” the band delves deeper into their signature sound with a powerful fusion of modern metalcore and nu-metal elements.
“Therapy” delivers everything fans love about Above the Ocean: heavy guitar riffs, a catchy chorus, a crushing breakdown, and passionate screams that resonate with the soul. Vocalist and lyricist José Saruga reflects on the track’s personal meaning, describing how music has served as his emotional release. “Sometimes life throws you into a hole when you least expect it. I discovered, back in 2006 with my first band, that my coping mechanism is to scream my lungs out until I’m drained of oxygen. And then I scream some more to keep the demons away.”
The accompanying music video, directed by Diogo Fragoso, takes viewers on a visual journey that feels more like a short film than a typical promo. It depicts the band undergoing an experimental treatment, where music serves as the cure—a metaphor for how music can be a powerful therapeutic force. “Playing and listening to music has been a form of therapy for us,” the band explains. “It’s our haven, and that’s the message we want to convey: music will always be there when everything else falls apart.”
With “Therapy,” Above the Ocean reminds us that music is more than just a distraction—it’s a battle cry against life’s struggles.
