Rap music icon Mad Skillz has made an unexpected comeback with his annual round-up track, “2024 Rap Up,” marking his return to the music scene after announcing his retirement in 2021. Known for delivering witty and insightful recaps of the year’s events, Skillz’s return feels particularly fitting given the whirlwind of moments in 2024.
For over two decades, Mad Skillz has offered listeners a humorous yet sharp commentary on the year’s biggest happenings, and this year is no different. The “2024 Rap Up” covers a wide array of events—from Snoop Dogg’s lucrative involvement in the Olympics to Shannon Sharpe’s viral Instagram mishap—delivered in Skillz’s signature comedic style.
In addition to his timely return, Skillz’s track also highlights the recent success of his album, The 7 Number Ones, which has earned a Grammy nomination. Speaking to 8News about the honor, Skillz reflected on the personal significance of the recognition.
“When something happens for the first time, it’s a memory that stays with you, good or bad,” Skillz shared. “I wanted to talk about seven things that happened in my life. They changed the trajectory of my life.”
The rapper also expressed gratitude for the collaborative nature of his Grammy nomination, acknowledging the other talented creators from his hometown. “I’m probably more happy for them than I am for myself,” he said. “Participating in a Grammy album is huge. And it’s no better than to do it with your homies and your friends from your hometown.”
