Hip-hop fans have reason to get excited for 2025 as legendary rapper Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def) announces his return to music, this time as part of a dynamic new collaboration. In a recent Instagram post, Bey revealed his upcoming joint album with famed producer The Alchemist, marking the formation of their super duo, Forensics.
The project will be Bey’s first full-length release in over six years, following his more reclusive period after the 2019 release of Negus, a sound installation that was only available for in-person listening at the Brooklyn Museum. Earlier this month, Bey teased new material during a livestream performance, leading many fans to believe it was a one-off, but his latest announcement confirms that there’s much more to come.
While details about the album remain scarce, fans can expect the unexpected when Bey and The Alchemist drop their collaboration in 2025. The duo will kick off the project with an exclusive world premiere event on January 25, 2025, at Le Trianon in Paris, where attendees will get a first listen to some of their unreleased tracks.
The Alchemist has had a busy year, contributing his signature production style to projects with J. Cole, Big Sean, and more. For Bey, whose recent music output has been limited, this collaboration marks a highly anticipated return to the rap scene. His last major release was No Fear of Time in 2022, a reunion with Talib Kweli as Black Star.
This new venture with The Alchemist is set to showcase Bey’s growth as an artist and highlight his musical legacy — a legacy that, as fans know, runs deep within his family. His daughter, Laila, has already begun to make her mark, proving that the artistic talent truly runs in the bloodline.
