Rap duo Smif-N-Wessun, comprised of Tek and Steele, will headline the Wisconsin Union Theater’s Black Box Sessions on February 13, 2025, at 8 p.m., stepping in for the previously scheduled th1rt3en performance. This marks a significant moment in the duo’s 30th anniversary celebration, as Smif-N-Wessun continues to shape the underground hip-hop scene.
The event promises a dynamic blend of new material and classic tracks from Smif-N-Wessun’s extensive catalog, including their first album Dah Shinin’ (released January 10, 1995). Fans can also expect the debut of the title track and first single from their upcoming album Infinity, set for release on January 10, 2025.
Known for their soulful beats and influences from jazz, reggae, and traditional hip-hop, Smif-N-Wessun’s music reflects their roots in the Bedford-Stuyvesant and Brownsville neighborhoods. Their lyrics tackle themes of disenfranchisement, resilience, and empowerment, offering an unflinching look at the struggles of everyday life.
“Smif-N-Wessun exemplifies the heart of hardcore hip-hop,” said Kate Schwartz, curator of the Black Box Sessions. “Their energy and raw storytelling transcend the medium, making this an essential experience for fans of the genre.”
The Black Box Sessions, in its inaugural year, is designed as an intimate, club-style performance series in the Play Circle Theater. The series aims to celebrate both underground and popular hip-hop, with additional performances by Marlowe on January 30, 2025, and Blackway on March 6, 2025.
