Despite the ongoing national mourning in South Korea following the tragic Jeju Air crash, K-pop groups including Twice, ILLIT, Tomorrow X Together, and Le Sserafim are confirmed to perform at Japan’s prestigious “NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen” on December 31.
The announcement comes after concerns arose in Japanese media about the participation of K-pop acts, following South Korea’s declaration of a mourning period through January 4. Many domestic events and festivals in South Korea have been canceled in response to the tragedy, which took place in Muan, South Jeolla, on Sunday.
Twice, one of the high-profile acts slated to perform, expressed their condolences following the incident. JYP Entertainment, representing the group, issued a statement on Monday, offering sympathy to the victims and their families. The agency confirmed that despite the mourning period, Twice and other K-pop artists will fulfill their commitments to the event, continuing their scheduled overseas appearances with due respect.
The 75th edition of “NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen,” which airs live from NHK Hall in Tokyo, is a major year-end tradition in Japan, showcasing a competitive lineup of the year’s top musical acts. The event will still feature several K-pop stars, with no official cancellations from any participating groups.
