Mickey Guyton marked the end of 2024 with a powerful performance in New York’s Times Square, closing out the year on a high note. The country singer-songwriter took to the stage just before the iconic ball drop, captivating the crowd with an energetic set that included her hits “All American,” “House on Fire,” and “My Side of the Country.”
Guyton, who has consistently broken barriers in country music, also honored the legendary John Lennon with a poignant rendition of his 1971 classic “Imagine.” As thousands gathered in Times Square and millions more tuned in from home, Guyton’s soulful performance resonated deeply, adding a touch of hope and reflection to the celebration.
In 2021, Guyton made history as the first Black solo female artist to receive a Grammy nomination in the country music category for her powerful track “Black Like Me.” She continued to build on her trailblazing career in 2024 with the release of her second album, House on Fire. In his review for Rolling Stone, Joseph Hudak praised the album, noting that Guyton “blazes trails” with her seamless transition into the dance-pop genre, calling the album a soundtrack for an era many hope will be defined by joy.
This year, Guyton also made a significant political appearance, performing her hit “All American” at the Democratic National Convention, marking her first time at a political event. She wrapped up her successful CMT on Tour in the fall, which took her to major cities including New York, Minneapolis, Des Moines, and Toronto. Reflecting on the tour, she described it as “a dream come true.”
In December, Guyton was surprised with a heartfelt message from another trailblazer in country music. Ahead of the release of Cowboy Carter, Beyoncé honored Guyton with a bouquet of flowers and a personal note, saying, “Mickey, thank you for opening doors for me, queen. Keep shining. Love and respect, Beyoncé.” Guyton responded with gratitude on social media, writing, “With opportunity comes possibility. The possibilities are endless with you @beyonce. God gave me an assignment and I followed. May the doors continue to stay wide open.”
As 2024 closed, Mickey Guyton stood as a symbol of progress and possibility in the music world, a trailblazer continuing to pave the way for others in country music and beyond.
