Julia Michaels and Maren Morris are back together for their second collaboration, “Scissors,” set to release on Friday, January 10th. This follow-up to their 2024 hit “cut!”—featured on Morris’ Intermission EP—brings a fresh, R&B-inspired sound, with both artists exchanging lyrics over an infectious, beat-driven instrumental.
The two tracks, “cut!” and “Scissors,” may share a thematic link through their titles, but the songs themselves take distinct directions. While “cut!” explores Morris’ struggle to maintain a facade of normalcy, “Scissors” shifts focus to the end of a relationship. In this new duet, the singers confidently tell their soon-to-be-exes that they aren’t fazed by the breakup, with the lyrics: “You wanna say goodbye? I’m not crying rivers / If you wanna cut ties, I’ll get the scissors baby.”
“Scissors” promises to be an empowering anthem, as Michaels and Morris playfully brush off any lingering bitterness, signaling that they’re ready to move on. Fans have eagerly awaited this release, as the duet is set to be a major single from Michaels’ highly anticipated sophomore album.
The song comes after the release of Michaels’ well-received “Heaven II” in November 2024, continuing her successful crossover into country music. Michaels has collaborated with a variety of country artists, including Josh Ross, Jordan Davis, and Keith Urban in recent years.
Meanwhile, Maren Morris, who rose to fame within the country scene, has been exploring a more pop-leaning sound, especially following her Intermission EP. After dropping singles like “People Still Show Up” in October, fans are eagerly awaiting her debut pop album.
With “Scissors,” Michaels and Morris continue to push creative boundaries and delight fans with their genre-blending collaborations.
