Chance the Rapper has reached a groundbreaking milestone, becoming the first independent artist ever to achieve Diamond certification. His hit single, “I’m the One,” a collaboration with DJ Khaled, Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne, and Quavo, has now sold over 10 million equivalent units in the U.S., as confirmed by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
Reflecting on the success of the track, which has garnered more than 1.8 billion views on YouTube, Chance shared his gratitude. “‘I’m the One’ has been a special record since the day we created it,” he said. “Watching it go Diamond is proof of its deep connection with so many fans. Big thanks to Khaled, Quavo, Justin, and Wayne. Performing this song always brings an incredible energy, and the love for it never fades. Closing out the year by performing it live in my hometown, the greatest city in the world, was unforgettable. I’m beyond grateful.”
This achievement marks another milestone in Chance’s illustrious career as an independent artist. He was the first unsigned artist to win multiple GRAMMY Awards for his streaming-only mixtape Coloring Book, and he made history as the first artist without a traditional record deal to both host and perform on Saturday Night Live.
Known for challenging industry norms, Chance’s success continues to defy expectations. His mixtape Acid Rap, a free release, also made waves by charting, making him the first independent solo artist to achieve such a feat. These accomplishments highlight his unique ability to thrive outside the confines of a major label.
