Young Thug made his highly anticipated return to music on January 3rd, featuring on Lil Baby’s new album WHAM in the track “Dum, Dumb, and Dumber,” alongside Future. The rapper wasted no time addressing his tumultuous legal battle, specifically the ongoing YSL RICO case that has kept him behind bars for over two years.
On the track, Thug reflects on his recent incarceration, rapping, “Yeah, n—a, King Spider back/ I don’t even believe I was locked up, for real, for real/ I was havin’ my way the whole time, fool, you know what I’m saying,” over Wheezy’s beat-driven production. His lyrics reveal his defiant stance, suggesting that despite his legal troubles, he never lost control of his narrative.
Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffrey Williams, was arrested in May 2022 on racketeering charges as part of the sprawling YSL RICO investigation, which has become one of Georgia’s longest-running legal cases. He spent over a year in jail before reaching a plea deal in October 2023, which led to his release. Thug pled guilty to possession charges and received a 15-year probation sentence but avoided further prison time.
Also arrested in 2022 alongside Thug was fellow YSL member Gunna, who reached an Alford plea agreement in December 2022 and was released. Since then, Gunna has been embroiled in public controversy, facing accusations of snitching—allegations that have divided fans and strained his relationships with fellow YSL artists, including Lil Baby. Gunna’s attorney, Steve Sadow, has vehemently denied any wrongdoing, stating on social media that Gunna’s plea deal did not affect Thug’s case.
“Gunna did NOT cooperate, and did NOTHING and said NOTHING to cause harm to Thug’s case,” Sadow wrote in a statement on January 3rd. He also addressed the ongoing backlash Gunna faces, urging critics to “get over it.”
Young Thug, for his part, has remained relatively silent on his relationship with Gunna since his release, aside from a now-deleted tweet in November 2023, where he cryptically distanced himself from Gunna, writing, “Gunna stop acting like we friends on the internet, I don’t know you my guy.”
As Young Thug continues to navigate his post-incarceration life, his appearance on WHAM marks a triumphant return to the music scene, with many fans eager to hear what’s next from the influential rapper.
