SZA’s chart-topping album SOS has achieved a historic milestone, logging its 12th nonconsecutive week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. This accomplishment marks the longest reign for an R&B/hip-hop album by a female artist in 38 years, surpassing Whitney Houston’s 14-week run with her self-titled album in 1986.
For the week ending January 2, SOS earned 130,000 equivalent album units. This total includes 125,500 streaming equivalent album units, translating to 166.31 million on-demand streams of the album’s tracks, 4,000 album sales, and 500 track equivalent album units. The album recently gained renewed momentum with the release of its deluxe LANA edition.
The record-breaking success of SOS reaffirms SZA’s impact on the music industry, as she continues to resonate with fans worldwide nearly a year after the album’s initial release.
In other Billboard 200 news, Kendrick Lamar climbed to No. 2, followed by Sabrina Carpenter at No. 3. The Wicked film soundtrack landed at No. 4, with Billie Eilish rounding out the top five.
The latter half of the top 10 includes Taylor Swift at No. 6, Chappell Roan at No. 7, Morgan Wallen at No. 8, Gracie Abrams at No. 9, and Tyler, the Creator at No. 10.
With her 12-week reign, SZA not only sets a new standard for R&B/hip-hop but solidifies her place in music history, proving that SOS is a defining album of its era.
