Cambodian rapper Ruthko, a prominent figure in the country’s hip-hop scene, tragically passed away early on January 6 following a traffic accident in Phnom Penh. The motorcycle he was riding collided with a Lexus around 1 a.m., marking a devastating end to his promising career. Cambodian roads, particularly at night, are notoriously perilous.
As news of the incident spread, fellow rappers and fans gathered at the scene, with distressing photos and videos quickly circulating online. Ruthko, who was signed to the Klap Ya Handz label at just 17, had made significant waves in the music industry with millions of YouTube views for hits like “Change Pt 2” and “Stay the Same.” In addition to his musical contributions, he had recently served as a brand ambassador for Idol energy drink and as a hip-hop coach on the TV series RAPPER FIGHTER.
Known for his raw, authentic style, Ruthko’s presence in the Cambodian music scene was undeniable. His career was on a sharp upward trajectory, with a feature on the cover of LiFTED magazine in March 2023 marking a major milestone.
Ruthko’s untimely passing has left a significant void in the local music community, and he will be remembered as an artist who spoke truth to power through his music. Rest in peace to a talent gone too soon.
