The Darkness has dropped a provocative new video for their single “I Hate Myself,” the latest track from their upcoming eighth studio album Dreams On Toast, set for release on March 28th via Cooking Vinyl.
Directed by Simon Emmett, the video is shot in a single, unedited take, offering a raw and intimate look at frontman Justin Hawkins in a completely new light. Known for his flamboyant style, Hawkins takes on a surprising, self-reflective role in the video. Playing with gender norms and channeling the persona of a chain-smoking diva, complete with flawless makeup and flowing hair, he explores the emotional fallout of a failed relationship—directly blaming himself.
In a statement, Hawkins shared his excitement about the collaboration with Emmett, saying, “I love working with Simon. Everything we’ve done together has turned out great, and this is no exception. The concept ties directly into the self-loathing explored in the song. I feel like the visual takes it to another level—it’s already my favorite Darkness song, and I can’t wait for everyone to see it.”
With its daring visuals and intense vulnerability, the video for “I Hate Myself” marks another bold step for the British rockers as they prepare for the album’s release.
