Vancouver Island-based hip-hop and pop artist Amarii, also known as Martin Rupprecht, is gearing up for the release of his highly anticipated debut single, “Play Me Again,” on January 24. The song is the lead track from his upcoming EP and marks a personal milestone for the artist.
Written and recorded during a recent session in Montreal, “Play Me Again” is an emotional mix of heartbreak and empowerment. Rupprecht describes it as a reflection of a past relationship, where everything seemed perfect until it suddenly fell apart. “It’s about heartbreak, at the same time as empowerment,” he explained. “It’s about a relationship I had where everything was going so well, and then, out of nowhere, she wasn’t into it anymore, and I felt like I didn’t do anything wrong.”
The track quickly gained traction on social media, solidifying its place as the perfect introduction to his music. “I’m building a fan base with it, people are wanting the song,” he added.
In the studio, “Play Me Again” came together quickly, with the chorus being written in just 45 minutes. Rupprecht recalls the moment they finalized the chorus: “I remember from the moment we made it, the chorus was just so special, and we knew it was something right off the bat.”
Before joining Kolossal, Amarii released three singles, including “Bad Guy,” which garnered over 50,000 views on YouTube and nearly 300,000 plays on Spotify. The success of “Bad Guy” led to his current collaboration with his manager and a growing fan base.
While Rupprecht has not performed live in some time, he is planning shows for 2025 and will be heading to Toronto for rehearsals to prepare a set list.
For aspiring musicians, Rupprecht’s advice is simple: “Just do it, and practice, practice, practice. Put the stuff out there on social media and see what people think. Creatively, use your surroundings and life experiences to inspire you.”
Amarii’s debut single “Play Me Again” will be available on all streaming platforms starting January 24, with his first EP set for release later this year. “It’s the introduction of Amarii,” Rupprecht said. “I feel very proud, very excited, and a bit anxious, but I believe in this song so much, and so does my team.”
