Alternative metal band Shadow of the Talisman has premiered the music video for their powerful new single, “What Is Real?”, a track from their highly anticipated album As Above, So Below, set for release on February 21, 2025, via Eclipse Records.
The song’s emotionally charged lyrics and complex musical arrangement are brought to life in a video directed by Mike Smith. It explores the theme of mental struggle, depicting the journey of the protagonist, The Outlaw (played by Brandon Stutzman), as he grapples with overwhelming negativity and disillusionment.
Drummer Kyle Williams describes the track as one of the band’s most compelling, emphasizing the “thought-provoking lyrics” and “musical prowess” that define the song. He reflects on the video’s striking visuals, noting that despite limited resources, the final product authentically captures the essence and tone of the track.
Smith, who also lends his voice to the band, adds that the video delves into the internal battle of someone dealing with life’s hardships. The raw emotion in the performance, paired with the decaying building setting, mirrors the decay of the character’s mental state.
The video’s production was a true band effort, with all members contributing to its writing, filming, and editing, making it a personal and authentic representation of the song’s message. Fans can now experience the intense visuals and powerful themes of “What Is Real?” as they await the release of the full album next month.
