XLOV’s “Genderless” Concept Sparks Debate in K-pop Community

XLOV

The debut of the boy group XLOV has ignited discussions surrounding the term “genderless” in K-pop. Consisting of four members, including three popular Boys Planet participants—Wumuti, Rui, Hyun, and Haru—the group has been touted as the first to debut with a “genderless” concept, capturing significant attention from fans and critics alike.

While several K-pop idols, such as ATEEZ’s Seonghwa, have embraced “androgynous” or “genderless” fashion, the use of the term has raised eyebrows in light of ongoing debates about gender and sexuality within and outside of K-pop. Some fans view the group’s fashion choices as “feminine-leaning” rather than truly “genderless.”

A viral discussion thread on X, shared by a transgender and nonbinary individual, questioned whether XLOV’s approach could be accurately described as genderless. The thread argued that true genderlessness would involve an exploration of the entire gender spectrum, citing groups like OnlyOneOf, known for their exploration of both heterosexual and queer themes. The conversation sparked a larger conversation about the expectations and boundaries surrounding gender expression in K-pop, particularly when it comes to idols who push against the traditional gender binary.
