Boulder-based psychedelic rock band The Dirty Turkeys are set to release their debut album, Cowboy Caravan, on February 21. The album blends an eclectic mix of western, blues, funk, and punk influences, creating a unique sound the band describes as “acid-cow punk.”

Composed of drummer Ty Tullar, vocalists Brad Hansen, guitarist Justin Hansen, and bassist Samuel Baker, The Dirty Turkeys have quickly carved out their own niche in the music scene. Tullar, originally from Aspen, shared with The Sopris Sun that the band’s genre-defying style is what truly sets them apart from others in the industry. “The main thing that comes to mind that I feel separates us from other bands is our ability to not conform to one genre,” Tullar said. “We’re always pushing the boundaries.”

Producer feedback on the upcoming album emphasized this versatility. “I’ve never heard another artist that has been able to ebb and flow between genres so easily,” Tullar recalled, further cementing the band’s ability to explore a broad musical landscape.

Listeners can expect a high-energy ride with each track, as the band’s music takes them through varied “musical universes.” The album’s title track, Cowboy Caravan, is a prime example, featuring a charismatic narrator who invites listeners on a wild journey akin to a psychedelic Mad Hatter-style adventure.

“I definitely look at our songs as like a whole universe in themselves, especially Cowboy Caravan,” said Baker. “I think our best songs are the ones that really create a big universe.”

The band is planning to hit the road following individual travels, with hopes of launching a summer tour in May. Having already played at venues like Belly Up Aspen, The Dirty Turkeys are eager to return to the Roaring Fork Valley and expand their touring reach. Dream destinations for the band include iconic venues like Red Rocks Amphitheatre, as well as major festivals such as Burning Man and Lollapalooza.

“Playing Red Rocks is the day I’ll say, ‘Holy shit, we’re doing this,’” Tullar said. “Festival-wise, Lollapalooza is another goal. We’d also love to perform in South America and Australia, hitting as many continents and countries as possible.”
