Mumford & Sons are back with a new song, “Rushmere,” the title track from their first album in seven years, set for release on March 28 via Glassnote. The song takes listeners back to the band’s folk roots, featuring the signature stomp-and-holler sound that made them festival favorites. Marcus Mumford’s powerful vocals soar over thumping drums, accompanied by acoustic guitar and banjo.
“Light me up I’m wasted in the dark,” sings Mumford in the hook. “Rushmere restless hearts in the end/Get my head out of the ground/Time don’t let us down again.”
The song’s title is a nod to Rushmere, a pond in Wimbledon Common in southwest London, where Mumford, Ben Lovett, and Ted Dwane first bonded and began to envision forming a band. Reflecting on their creative journey, the band described the last couple of years as “the most prolific two years we’ve ever had,” according to a brief statement on Instagram. “We’re restless to get going, relieved, and excited to share this first one with you.”
Recorded with producer Dave Cobb at RCA Studio A in Nashville, as well as in Savannah, Georgia, and at Mumford’s studio in Devon, England, Rushmere marks the band’s first album as a trio following Winston Marshall’s departure. Marshall left the group in part due to political differences with his bandmates.
The new album follows their 2018 release Delta and comes after a few singles, including “Blind Leading the Blind” and “Forever,” plus Marcus Mumford’s solo debut in 2022. While the band performed a new track, “Maybe,” with Noah Kahan at Austin City Limits in 2023, it won’t be part of Rushmere’s tracklist. The band also collaborated with Pharrell for the 2023 single “Good People,” which featured a Native American vocal choir.
Fans can expect Rushmere to offer a fresh chapter for the band as they return to their roots.
