Def Leppard kicked off their 2025 tour on January 18 with a performance at Feria Estatal De León in León, Mexico, but one key member was notably absent — guitarist Viv Campbell.

As the band took the stage, frontman Joe Elliott informed the audience that Campbell, 62, was unable to attend due to ongoing recovery from cancer treatment. “Vivian Campbell cannot be with us tonight,” Elliott said, according to Ultimate Classic Rock. “He’s just recovering from some treatment for his cancer. So, manfully, please say hello to the guy that’s standing in for him tonight, Mr. John Zocco on guitar.”

Zocco, a touring guitarist and photographer for the band, filled in for Campbell during the show. Representatives for Campbell have yet to comment on the situation.

Campbell, who was first diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in 2013, has publicly shared his battle with the illness. Following an initial round of chemotherapy, Campbell went into remission later that year. However, he has faced relapses over the years, with the cancer returning in 2015. In a 2023 podcast appearance, Campbell further discussed his ongoing fight with the disease.

The rock legend’s health has been a topic of concern for fans, but his determination to continue performing and sharing his story has been an inspiration to many.
