Opeth frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt revealed what he considers to be the band’s worst song — By the Pain I See in Others from their 2002 album Deliverance.
Reflecting on the track’s creation, Åkerfeldt described a chaotic recording process where much of the album was written on the fly. “I didn’t have a single song when we went in to record that album, so everything was written in the studio,” he explained. “By the end, I was completely burnt out, sick, and exhausted. You can tell it in the song.”
While Åkerfeldt admitted that the track was surprisingly fun to perform live, he emphasized that it’s a “tired song” that doesn’t hold up to his own standards, adding, “It’s not good.”
