Wayne Shaw, the older brother of Bay Area rap icon Too Short, was fatally shot in Oakland during an attempted robbery, police reported.
The incident occurred around 7 a.m. when multiple suspects attempted to ram a vehicle into an industrial building on 49th Avenue, near East 12th Street. According to Oakland police Lt. Gloria Beltran, Shaw confronted the suspects as they tried to force their way into the property. During the confrontation, the suspects opened fire, shooting Shaw multiple times.
Shaw, 61, was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later died from his injuries. Police have not determined whether Shaw was specifically targeted or if the robbery was random. The suspects fled the scene in an unknown vehicle, and authorities are investigating Shaw’s possible connection to the property that was targeted.
Too Short, whose real name is Todd Anthony Shaw, grew up in Oakland and is celebrated as a pioneering figure in West Coast hip-hop. He began his music career in the 1980s and, in 2022, the city honored him by naming a street in East Oakland after him. Too Short has yet to publicly comment on his brother’s tragic death.
