Rap music star Kendrick Lamar, fresh off a historic sweep at the Grammys, is bringing his signature “storytelling” style to the Super Bowl halftime show this Sunday. Lamar, who took home awards in all five categories he was nominated for—including Record of the Year and Song of the Year—will headline the highly anticipated performance during the Kansas City Chiefs vs. Philadelphia Eagles matchup. Joining him on stage will be acclaimed artist SZA.
Ahead of the NFL’s season finale, Lamar teased his approach to the show, emphasizing the storytelling element that’s been a hallmark of his music. “I’ve always been very open about storytelling through my catalogue,” he said, adding that his aim is to make listeners both reflect and engage with his music.
Reflecting on his journey, Lamar shared that when he started his career, performing at the Super Bowl was far from his thoughts. While he made an appearance as a featured artist in a 2022 hip-hop showcase, this will be his first time headlining the prestigious halftime event.
“I wasn’t thinking about no Super Bowl—I was thinking about the best verse,” he recalled. “What I know is the passion I have now is still the passion I had then.”
Lamar and SZA will hit the road together for a tour in April, continuing their musical collaboration.
