With the release of their highly anticipated collaboration “Hard Fought Hallelujah,” Jelly Roll and Brandon Lake have sparked discussion within the Christian music community. In a heartfelt conversation, Jelly Roll reflected on his faith journey and the criticism he has faced from some Christian listeners.
Brandon Lake, a prominent Contemporary Christian artist, originally released “Hard Fought Hallelujah” as a solo track in 2024. When news broke that Jelly Roll would join him for a reimagined version, some questioned whether the country-hip-hop star was the right fit for the collaboration. However, the response has been largely positive, with many fans recognizing Jelly Roll’s openness about his faith and his extensive charitable work.
In an emotional discussion, Jelly Roll addressed the backlash, sharing, “I’ve been called a ‘lukewarm’ Christian, a ‘fence-rider,’ a ‘cussing Christian.’ I know God has more to do with me. I know I have a long way to go, but my heart was only to share the faith that changed my life.” He emphasized that while his approach may differ from traditional expectations, his devotion remains strong: “I might wear it a little different than other people, but ultimately, I have a heart for God and Jesus.”
Jelly Roll also praised Brandon Lake for choosing authenticity over outside opinions when selecting a collaborator for “Hard Fought Hallelujah.” “You could have called anybody else in this town—someone less controversial. But you thought outside the box,” he said. Lake, in response, reaffirmed his decision, stating simply, “Because I got his heart.”
Grateful for the opportunity, Jelly Roll closed the conversation with heartfelt appreciation: “Thank you, brother, for picking me. I mean that.”
Despite the initial debate, the collaboration stands as a testament to faith, transformation, and breaking barriers in Christian music.
