Gospel music icon Marvin Sapp is stepping outside his comfort zone with the release of a new R&B EP, If I Were an R&B Singer, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Known for his powerful presence in contemporary gospel, the 11-time Grammy nominee and Bishop has ventured into new territory after an illustrious career that includes 14 top 10 hits on Billboard’s Gospel Albums chart and multiple chart-topping singles.
The release follows Sapp’s career-spanning live album, Then And Now (2024), and his participation in Kirk Franklin’s Reunion Tour, alongside gospel luminaries Fred Hammond, Yolanda Adams, and The Clark Sisters. With If I Were an R&B Singer, Sapp embraces the freedom to experiment with a different genre, sharing that he feels empowered to take risks outside his established gospel roots.
Though gospel remains his primary genre, this EP represents a brief, yet exciting, exploration of R&B. Throughout his career, Sapp has reached audiences far beyond gospel, with his 2007 hit “Never Would Have Made It” becoming a rare crossover success, charting on both Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and the Billboard Hot 100. This new EP is a testament to his musical versatility, as he continues to expand his creative horizons.
