Former Guns N’ Roses drummer Matt Sorum has cast doubt on the possibility of Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler returning to the touring circuit, following the band’s official retirement announcement in August 2024. Sorum’s comments come just weeks after Tyler made a brief return to the stage at his sixth annual Jam for Janie Grammy Awards Viewing Party, where he performed live for the first time since a 2023 vocal injury forced Aerosmith to halt their tour.

Tyler, who was joined by Extreme’s Nuno Bettencourt for the event, performed covers of songs by Extreme and Led Zeppelin, as well as four Aerosmith classics. He was accompanied by an all-star lineup, including Mick Fleetwood, Lainey Wilson, Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes, Jessie J, and Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton. Despite the enthusiastic reception from fans, Sorum, who served as the event’s musical director, told WBAB’s Joe Rock that the physical demands of global touring would likely prevent Tyler from performing on such a large scale again.

“Given the toll of years of touring and his recent vocal struggles, I don’t see Steven going back to the road in a major way,” Sorum explained, emphasizing that while Tyler may still perform occasionally, a full-fledged tour seems unlikely.
