Photographer Jonathan Rach will showcase rare images from Nine Inch Nails’ legendary Self Destruct tour in a new exhibition debuting in New York City and Los Angeles. The exhibition offers a fresh perspective on the band’s groundbreaking 1994-1996 tour, which supported their second album, The Downward Spiral.
Rach, who also filmed much of the tour for NIN’s 1997 documentary Closure, captures the raw energy and significance of the experience through over 20 photographs, including candid shots of David Bowie and Lou Reed. The exhibit, presented by Behind the Gallery, will first appear at the Morrison Hotel Gallery in New York from February 21 to 23, with an album playback event on February 21 and a talk by Rach on February 22. The L.A. show will follow from March 6 to 9 at 7615 W. Sunset Blvd, with events on March 7 and 8.
Rach reflected on the profound impact of the tour, noting, “I knew night after night that Trent [Reznor] was doing something pretty special… The shows had a ferocious energy matched only by the crowd.” He also recalled a memorable backstage encounter with Bowie, who remarked, “You just became the most important person in the room.”
In addition to the 1994-1996 images, the exhibition will feature photos from Nine Inch Nails’ 2018 Hollywood Palladium shows. Rach hopes the exhibition allows fans to feel the energy of the tour and celebrates the 30th anniversary of The Downward Spiral and its iconic Self Destruct tour.
