McKinley Dixon is set to explore the many layers of magic—both light and dark—in his forthcoming album, Magic, Alive!, slated for release on June 6. The album delves into the unexpected ways magic manifests, including themes like grief that don’t typically come to mind when thinking of wonder.
The album’s first preview, “Sugar Water,” features contributions from Quelle Chris and Anjimile, and it invites listeners to reflect on the fragility of life and how we try to immortalize fleeting moments. Dixon explained, “‘Sugar Water’ is a discussion on how to make fleeting moments last forever, and how to carry those not here with you through time and space. It raises the question, ‘What’s the price to pay for an eternal life lived through others’ memories?’”
This new project marks Dixon’s first full-length LP since his 2023 release Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!?, which also grappled with grief and the mythology of modern life. Magic, Alive! was recorded in Dixon’s hometown of Richmond, Virginia, offering him a fresh perspective on both his work and the people around him. Reflecting on his time there, he shared, “It’s like a celebration when I make a record back in Richmond… Everybody has grown, but now here we are together again.”
Magic, Alive! promises to be a deep and personal exploration, following Dixon’s recent contemplation of memory and loss, as seen in tracks like “Tyler, Forever” from his previous album. Fans can look forward to more thought-provoking work when Magic, Alive! hits shelves in June.
Tracklist for Magic, Alive! is yet to be revealed.
